Helen's Story

Complex Total Knee Replacement at Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, Birmingham

Helen lost her right leg to childhood cancer at the age of five, and for more than 40 years her left leg was her only weight-bearing limb. A fracture that never fully healed, followed by 25 years of chronic pain and instability, made hers one of the most complex knee replacement cases imaginable: the knee had to succeed, because there was no other leg to fall back on.

In December 2025 Mr Hussain performed a total knee replacement and patella repair. Within 24 hours Helen stood unaided on her new knee, the step she needed before her prosthesis could even be fitted. Six months on she walks with a single crutch and is learning to walk again alongside her grandson, Leo. Her story has been featured by the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital and Coventry Live.
