Before you come to see me
Hip and knee arthritis has a way of shrinking a person’s life. The long walk goes first, then the stairs become a calculation, then sleep. What draws me to this work is that, for the right patient at the right time, a well-performed hip or knee replacement gives most of that back. I have spent my whole consultant career on the hip and knee alone, and I still find it a privilege.
There are two things I would like you to know before you come to see me. The first is that a consultation is not a commitment to an operation. It is an assessment and an honest conversation about your options, and non-surgical treatment is always one of them. If I do not think surgery will help you, or the timing is wrong, I will say so.
The second is that if surgery is the right answer, I will look after you from that first appointment through to your recovery. Experience matters in this field, but so does continuity; you should never feel you are being passed along a line.
I trained in some of the leading arthroplasty units in the UK and Europe, and I now practise at the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham, in the NHS and privately. The Royal Orthopaedic is a tertiary referral centre for complex joint replacement and revision surgery, which means the hip and knee problems that other hospitals cannot take on are sent to us. It is also where new techniques and approaches in hip and knee surgery are usually used first, so what I offer you is shaped by that environment.
